Anemia - Iron deficiency

Anemia is a condition where the number of erythrocytes, hemoglobin concentration or the concentration of iron in the blood is significantly reduced. Anemia can occur at any period of life or physiological state (growth, pregnancy) when the cause is not the absence but the increased need. Anemia may occur through other conditions such as in diseases of the digestive system, liver, kidney, metabolic disorder, post-surgery and hormonal disorders.

Symptoms of anemia include: dizziness, fatigue, pale skin and mucous membranes, poor quality hair, headaches, palpitations, poor resistance to various viruses and infections. Given that there are multiple causes and symptoms of the disease there is no one universal cure but is used individual treatment.

When the body does not get sufficient amounts of iron, which is necessary for the formation of hemoglobin in red blood cells, their life potential is decreased. Hemoglobin carries oxygen, so with iron deficiency the levels of hemoglobin is reduced, which is why the cells do not receive enough oxygen, hence do not function properly.

In order to help your body to better absorb the iron you need to follow these rules:

  1. Milk and other products that are rich in calcium is necessary to eat separately from products that contain iron, because calcium disrupts the assimilation of iron,
  2. Eat raw vegetables and fruits rich in vitamin C with a meal which contains iron, because vitamin C enhances iron assimilation,
  3. Drinking freshly squeezed juice before meals also promotes assimilation of iron in the body,
  4. Smoking should be avoided in case of anemia as it encourages its development,
  5. Avoid use of caffeinated beverages.
As in the treatment of any disease diet plays an important role, so the diet is very important for the treatment of anemia too. People suffering from anemia need to eat as many foods rich in iron, such as whole-grain cereals, eggs, meat, fish, nuts and legumes. While the foods that help in the treatment of anemia include: garlic, beets, cocoa, honey, walnuts, pomegranate, blackberry and nettles.

It is necessary to drink as much of nettle tea during the day, preferably without sugar. Nettle tea is made very easy. Pour boiling water over finely chopped leaves of fresh or dried nettle. Let it sit for a few minutes and strain.
